She’s the style guru who has mastered the science of personal and interior styling. But for Make It Look Easy founder Natalie Tucker, taking her company online is a move that has yielded incredible results, enabling her to support more people through her styling offering. From finding your perfect personal colours, to your wardrobe staples shopping list, the Make It Look Easy team pride themselves on helping you to overcome wardrobe overwhelm.
Lauren Zwaans from KIS Communications chats with Natalie about her growing business, her strong social media game, and her top tip for buying less and living more.
// Lauren: Your business is such a great concept! When did you start Make It Look Easy and why?
Natalie: Make It Look Easy was born as a small business in June 2013 and became a company in January 2016. Make It Look easy was created to take all of my styling information online. Basically, I ran out of hours in the day to service clients in person, so the next step was to take my systems and teach them online.
// Tell us about your course options! What does your offering involve?
I have a couple of online courses, one on Personal styling and one on Interior Styling.
My Course Members work through modules and post their homework either into a highly engaged closed face book group or converse with me over email. Whatever they feel most comfortable with.
I have payment plans available to remove too much financial stress and I have a team of 10 admin consultants who help me to make sure that everyone finishes and gets results. We all know how easy it is to start something and then get way too busy to finish – well, not on my watch!
// What role does science play in what you do?
My style systems are all built on the science of each individual. This means that I can give them their perfect personal colour list, perfect prints, perfect contrast, the perfect shopping list and the perfect “you only need these five colours to live your best life” final map. All based on them personally.
Information like that is created through testing, testing and more testing until it becomes a science so spot on that you can’t go wrong. Anyone can use my no fail formula and achieve amazing results. I cure wardrobe overwhelm.
// How did you become a personal stylist?
Originally, I studied Interior Styling/Design as I had a huge passion for decorating homes. Our Family then moved to New Zealand and I didn’t have time to build up clientele so I went back to working in Fashion. My design skills however soon became well known, as I used my education for styling homes on dressing my customers. Soon I was winning awards in service and plenty of reward cards.
The company that I worked for thought that it would be cheaper to hire me as their company stylist. I then felt that it was important to receive my International Accreditation in Personal Styling just so that I had some kind of certificate. I studied this online while living in New Zealand.
It didn’t take long before customers from in-store started wanting to hire me for their wardrobes at home and while there, of course – their Interiors as well. I went out on my own, returned to Australia in 2010 and launched my first small business, Defined Image. This then became Make It Look easy three years later and, three years after that, became a company. We are now 10 years in.
Huge tip – there is no such thing as an overnight success!
// We love that buying less is part of your philosophy. Why is this important to you?
Too much choice is what gives us overwhelm, anxiety and panic attacks. We should all own less so we can live more. Grab and go – but look and feel amazing while doing it.
// What’s one of your top styling tips for buying less and living more?
Finding out your personal five staple colour system. Five is all you need which means that everything works together and on you. You don’t need more than this to thrive. You can have more, by all means, but five is seriously all that you need.
// How long have you been part of the SA Woman community and why did you decide to join?
I joined in November 2019 after seeing an article with one of my wardrobe course members, Kara Lambert, featured. That gave me enough social proof to know that it was an association that I should also be a part of.
// What do you love most about what you do?
Enriching the lives of others by giving them back the power in their choices. Watching them have complete control over what now happens to them is seriously priceless!

// You’ve amassed a huge social media following! What do you attribute this to?
Never forgetting who I do all of this for. Not jumping to the next shiny thing, but staying true to who I serve and asking them what more they want from me. Staying committed and loyal to solving problems has had people getting behind me and sharing me everywhere. There is more power in word of mouth than anything else in this world. My success comes entirely from those who choose to support me on a daily basis.
