Financial planning is more than a numbers game for Hayley Dyson, founder of Dyson Financial. She believes in avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to supporting her clients with their wealth management, superannuation and insurances. Instead, she takes an individual approach that takes into account their personal preferences.

In today’s interview with Lauren Zwaans from KIS Communications Hayley shares her top financial tip, explains why superannuation is so important, and tells why she loves being an SA Woman.

Thanks for being our August Business Partner of the Month! Tell us about Dyson Financial.

It sounds so cliché, but I really love helping people, and that’s why I became a Financial Planner. I was working for a small boutique business, and decided to go out on my own to be able to spend more time with my family and really do the best thing for my clients with no restraints. I am now in my second year and I have no regrets!

What services do you offer your clients?

I specialise in helping people ensure that their superannuation is working for them: that they are not paying too much in fees, and that it is invested properly. I am also very passionate about making sure that everyone has adequate personal insurances in place, such as Life Insurance and Income Protection, to make sure that no matter what happens, your family will be okay! I can also assist clients with specialised investments, and I also do Retirement Planning: helping people work out what their retirement will look like, and putting a dollar figure on it.

What do you love most about running your own business?

The freedom and flexibility to really help people. I want Financial Planning to be accessible to everyone. Whether you have $5 or $500,000, I believe that everyone can benefit from seeing a Financial Planner.

I can also decide the hours that I work, and the fees that I charge, and balance this around my family – except that when you are running your own business you don’t really get a day off!!

The financial industry has had a bad rap of late. How do you counter the bad press?

A lot of the bad press was around the big banks, and I am very proud to be licensed with a licensee that has no affiliation with any bank or financial institution. I have actually found that my business has increased! Unfortunately, as with any industry, there are definitely a few bad apples, however I am authentic and genuinely want to do the best I can for my clients, and everyone that works with me can see that I hope.

What is your top piece of advice when it comes to creating wealth?

That there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Everyone is different, and has different goals and different levels of risk tolerance. Some clients love property; others prefer shares. It’s all actually very individual, and everyone’s journey is different! Having said that though, everyone has superannuation, and making sure that you are in a fund that has competitive fees and a great return can make a big difference in the long run.

How long have you been an SA Woman and why did you join?

My first SA Woman meeting actually coincided with the first day that I started my business, so it just seemed like fate! Such a lovely group of supportive women, and I am proud to support SA women in business.

What’s ahead for Dyson Financial in the next 12 months?

My goal for 2019 is to help 50 clients save money on their superannuation and set up a proper personal insurance plan as a backup.

How important is it to be financially literate?

It is very important to understand where your money is going, and what options are available to you, particularly with borrowings, as there is a lot of fine print! There are many great brokers out there who can assist with this. And as I have said twice already, superannuation is so important to get right, so this is also something that everyone should be educated around.

Personal insurances are so important to get right, and making sure that you have enough cover is so important. This is also something that I specialise in. It’s about getting the right amount of money into the right hands at the right time.
