I am a visual artist from the Clare Valley providing art sales, art kits, commissions and events and have been running my business, The Journey Studio, since 2013.
Vibrant and fun is how I would describe my artworks and they usually depict animals as I enjoy painting their eyes and expressions. I also like to experiment with florals and portraits. As with any other product, I take pride in using only premium quality materials when creating to ensure my artworks are of an archival quality.
In 2017 I started hosting Paint and Plonk events and workshops throughout the Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, Copper Coast, Adelaide and I was lucky enough to hold an event in Tasmania.
These workshops are either privately hosted or I create public events where anyone can attend. They are aimed at making art fun and accessible as I breakdown each artwork and guide the participants through their creations.
This is a completely mobile painting business and can go absolutely anywhere.
// Why did you go into business?
When I started I was already running a business creating logos and designing business cards etc. but was no longer enjoying it. My children were 2 and 4 at the time and I was spending a ridiculous amount of money on art supplies for myself and for them and thought ‘why not get art supplies at a wholesale price?’ and ‘why not make it a business?’. At the time there were only limited art supplies available in our local area so it gave me a great starting point.
// Who has been your greatest support?
My wonderful husband, Rob, has supported me at every step of my business journey. He has not only been my IT support (as that is his business) but has helped to keep me grounded when I have my head up in the clouds. He is a fantastic sounding board when I have new ideas and will give me honest feedback on my artworks.
// What do you love most about working for yourself?
The flexibility of working for myself around my family and other commitments is what I love most about being in business. It means I can be there for them when I’m needed. I also really enjoy sneaky lunch meetings while the kids are at school.
// Do you have a fave place to spend summer/go to for coffee/ go to to relax/ go to for food?
I just love living and working in South Australia! The people are friendly, the scenery is beautiful and we have such wonderful places to visit. As Paint and Plonk takes me to different venues, I have been lucky enough to see places I wouldn’t normally go and meet people I wouldn’t normally meet.
// What advice would you give other women wanting to start a business?
The best advice I have received is that ‘not every opportunity is a good opportunity’. When I first started out, I wanted to give my time too freely or jump at everything thrown my way in case I missed out. I soon realised that most of these ‘opportunities’ were time wasters, did not benefit myself or my business and the promised money or exposure was not worth it. Now that I look more carefully at requests and actually say ‘no’ occasionally, I feel that I am a much happier person and my business and family are better for it.
// Share with us a quote or mantra you live by…
‘Go with the flow’ is something I try to live by. You can’t control everything, adjust your business as times and circumstances change and it’s ok to change your mind.
