After a year in the making, entrepreneur and makeup artist Megan Potter is set to launch a new skincare line. Megan, who runs Megan Potter Cosmetics together with fellow South Australian Amanda Hawtin, left the finance sector 15 years ago to pursue a career in the beauty industry.

Lauren Zwaans from KIS Communications chats with her about the beauty of her chemical free products, being in business during challenging times, her time working as a personal stylist, and upcoming makeup workshops.

// You made the move from Queensland to Adelaide. How are you finding it so far?

Megan: I grew up in Belair in the Adelaide Hills so it’s returning home for me and my husband. His work took us up to Townsville in 2011 for 18 months and then onto Brisbane, so it’s nice to return to our roots after eight years away.

Life’s a little different now with two kids in tow but we’re looking forward to showing off South Australia to them as isolation restrictions are lifted.

// It’s been a really unusual time for everyone in business. How are you pivoting as a business and what’s the response been like?

For us as an online business it really has been business as usual. If anything, we have been busier than usual with everyone staying home and shopping online.

We have had some small supply issues but all in all it hasn’t been too bad for us because we source our ingredients and supplies from Australia whenever possible.

// It sounds like the take-up of your online classes has been massive! Why did you decide to offer these and what will participants learn?

Yes, we have been thrilled with the response. We created our online beauty and makeup courses for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, we noticed a gap in the market for women wanting to learn makeup techniques to use on themselves. There are plenty of makeup courses to teach you to be a makeup artist but none specifically to teach you how to contour or apply eye shadow on yourself. We want to make women feel naturally beautiful and confident within themselves and highlight what they already have…not feel like they need to apply a “mask” so Makeup School was born!

We also found that applying mineral makeup can be very different to traditional liquid foundation so for women to get the most out of our products they needed to be shown how to use them…and throw those old techniques out the window!

You can find our free courses here: https://www.meganpotter.com.au/

// For those of us not in the know, what are some of the benefits of mineral makeup?

Gosh, there are so many! Firstly, not all mineral makeup is created equal. Ours is the most pure, with only five finely ground crystals. These crystals are insoluble in water so they cannot dry out your skin. Instead they mix with the natural oils in your skin and create a beautiful dewy finish.

MP mineral makeup is packed full of zinc oxide, so it naturally protects your skin from UVA and UVB rays (SPF20) and doesn’t clog your pores, making it safe for all skin types, from acne prone through to dry/mature skin.

The nourishing minerals in MP makeup are so good for your skin you can sleep in it. The zinc oxide reduces puffiness and redness, and helps to heal acne and abrasions.

// You’re also launching a new skin care range. What can you tell us about it and when can we get our hands on these products?

We are so excited to release our skin care range on May 29, 2020. It has literally just arrived at our headquarters!

Our first drop will include Organic Gentle Cleansing Oil and three different facials oils: Refreshing Facial Oil for all skin types, Nurturing Facial Oil for sensitive skin and Healing Facial Oil for acne prone skin.

The facial oils replace your serum, eye cream and moisturiser. They contain highly concentrated organic oils selected for their moisturising, anti-inflammatory properties that balance your natural sebum (oil) that aids your skin to look its natural best. They really are a miracle product!

Our next release will be natural shampoo and conditioner mid-year. We are so happy with the performance of both products we can’t wait to share them with our community.

// Where are your products made and what sets them apart?

Our mineral makeup is made right here in Adelaide and our skin and hair care is made in New South Wales.

We use only those ingredients that you need, and none of the ingredients you don’t. Our skin and hair care products are Certified Organic wherever possible, which means we can trace the origin of our ingredients all the way to the farms they were grown on.

This gives our customers confidence that our ingredients are free from artificial fertilizers and toxic chemicals. When an ingredient is not available from within Australia, we will only purchase from reputable and ethical suppliers, and never with countries that are associated with child labour.

Our skin and hair care products have undergone a rigorous accreditation process to become Certified Organic. The rigorous nature of the accreditation process gives our customers assurance that our products are safe, natural, pure and of the highest quality.

// What is your favourite product right now and why?

This changes all the time! I’ve always got a new favourite lippy or gloss (right now its Stolen Kiss) but my favourite product at the moment is the Refreshing Facial Oil and I can’t wait to share it with the world!!

I’ve been using it for a little over a year now as we test it and get it perfect to sell and my skin health has improved dramatically! I was always the one trying to cover up my terrible skin and now I get compliments on my skin on a daily basis (no exaggeration!).

The vitamins and essential fatty acids in the Refreshing Facial Oil, have given me a healthy glow all while calming my rosacea and not clogging my pores. It’s true love!

// Tell us about your experience as a personal stylist! It sounds like it’s taken you all over the world. Does this aspect of your work inform your approach as a makeup artist and beauty therapist?

It was actually makeup that took me to Dubai in the early days of my career. At the time I was working with an amazing chemist who I work with now. I attended the International Beauty Expo, which took Australian mineral makeup to the world stage.

It was in 2011 that I met Nat Tucker as one of her styling clients. I really enjoyed my experience, which inspired me to undertake styling as a career. When my styling clients started asking for natural Australian made makeup, MP Cosmetics was born. We started out small and now work in our business full-time. Collaborating with Nat Tucker seemed like a natural progression for us and almost like we’d come full circle.

Together we created a suite of foundation shades, eye shadows, blushes and lipsticks that came together to form four beautiful makeup packs, aptly named the Nat Tucker Collection.

// What do you love most about running your business?

Running your own business is a lot of hard work but I am lucky enough to work with my talented cousin!

We both enjoy the creativity, freedom and flexibility associated with running a cosmetics company. We are both busy mums so being able to spend time with our kids while balancing work is fantastic! We are very lucky!

Not many people can run a company and still be there for the school run.

// If you weren’t running Megan Potter, what would you be doing?

I have always been drawn to jobs that have abundant opportunities to work with people. I love people, and am at my best when I guide others to see the beauty within themselves.

I have even liked the idea of being a marriage celebrant! I love people and I LOVE love!
