Hi, I’m Rachel, wife, mother of 4 little people and baby whisperer of the Little Oak Studio. I began my photography journey after finishing my graphic design apprenticeship to go on maternity leave with my eldest son.
It was not long after that I discovered I had this passion for photographing babies and families. After operating my business out of our home for a number of years I finally bit the bullet and signed my commercial lease. My studio is now in Ridgehaven, and I am loving it! I’ve created such a safe and welcoming space for my clients to come and enjoy the best experience possible!
My biggest hurdle would have to be COVID-19. Only months after signing my new lease I was forced to close the doors. I came up with the idea of documenting this time with photographs. I have now published a book called ‘The COVID Tales’. It made me step so far out of my comfort zone, but it has been such a rewarding experience! I have had the opportunity to meet more of the amazing SA Women and get to know other people’s business stories too.
Also, not long after I moved into my new space, I began working with Tammy Edwards whom I met through Alison Kennedy (more amazing SA Women!). I have already learnt such a great deal from Tammy, both personally and in business. She has allowed me to realise not everything is about work and I can choose to enjoy life too!
I am so proud to have shown my kids that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything you want!
I love working for myself in the sense that you can literally dictate your hours, what you do and when you do it, who you work for/with. By working for myself it allows me to be there for my kids and my family while also being able to create a life I love! We are so fortunate here in SA to have such a diverse range of amazing local businesses.
I’m still learning this, but I have to remind myself that “done is better than perfect”. As a perfectionist it can really be debilitating at times, but I know there are many business women out there who feel the same and it is so reassuring to know many of you are there to support me in this amazing network and community that is SA Woman.
