2024 Women to Watch

This year we showcase over 80 South Australian women to watch throughout the year. From business, to careers, arts to science. This year’s selected women highlight the depth and diversity of the women in our state and also the vast array of opportunities to develop a business or career in South Australia. Find our more about our inaugural Women to Watch initiative here.

I was a qualified hairdresser for 21 years, owned my own salon, and trained apprentices. During this period, I was also a lecturer through BITE providing registered training to students in regional areas.. During this period, I volunteered as an ambulance officer and earned a Certificate 2 in Medical Emergency Response.

I sold the salon due to a shoulder injury that prevented me from working in the Hair & Beauty profession any longer. I wanted to stay connected with the community and find a way to give back. I completed a Certificate 3 in Disability and worked with Community Living Australia for four years. Coastal Community Support Services began at my home office in January 2022, eventually transferring to our current facility at Mclaren Vale Shopping Centre in May 2023.

// Favourite inspirational quote
Life is a beautiful struggle.

I have this quote tattooed on me actually, I believe every day is beautiful and life is challenging, it’s not meant to be easy.

// Let’s get to know you
I was driven to make a career change after injuring my shoulder and decided not to work in the hair and beauty industry anymore. This experience made me reflect on the importance of providing better treatment and care for people. Creating a space where individuals can receive improved treatment is what sparked my interest in working in the Disability and Mental Health sector. I aspire to create an environment where people can be treated equally.

I have a Certificate 3 in Disability support, Certificate 3 Hairdressing, Certificate 4 in Beauty Therapy, Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment, an Undergraduate Certificate for Community Support at University of Tasmania and currently working towards my associate degree in Community Support.

// What makes you a Woman to Watch for 2024?
In my career, I am deeply passionate about advocating for fair work practices and ensuring the well-being of employees. I believe that creating a flexible work environment is crucial in accommodating individuals at all stages of life. Additionally, what sets me apart is my dedication to helping others and making a positive impact in the world, even if I may not always seek recognition for my achievements.

// What is your goal or intention for the year ahead? And how are you going to achieve it?
Continuing to expand the business, grow the clients and employees base by double, and ensure our quality service continues to grow. In addition to my passion for helping others and creating a fair work environment, I am also dedicated to fostering innovation and staying ahead of industry trends. I consistently seek out opportunities for professional development and actively engage in networking events to expand my knowledge and connections. My goal for the year ahead is to further establish our company as a leader in the industry by implementing strategic marketing campaigns, strengthening client relationships, and investing in cutting-edge technologies.

By consistently delivering exceptional service and staying adaptable to evolving market demands, I am confident that we will achieve our growth targets and solidify our position as an industry leader.

// What would being a 2024 Woman to Watch mean to you?
Being a woman to watch in 2024 would mean so much more than just personal achievement and recognition. It would serve as a powerful source of inspiration for my daughters, showcasing that there are no limitations to what they can achieve. It also would serve as a great reminder of what I started from to where I am now.

// What would you like to see for the future of South Australian women and girls?
I would like to see women having more access to flexible working hours and childcare facilities in businesses to ensure they can balance their careers and family responsibilities.

This promotes gender equality and prevents talented women from having to choose between their careers and raising a family. Support systems like flexible working hours and parental leave policies can further empower women to pursue their professional aspirations while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
