Otherwise known as: Healthy You, Healthy Business.

At SA Woman, we know the importance of taking care of ourselves as much as we do our businesses. Your own health is a key factor for predicting long-term business success, because if you’re not healthy, then your business won’t be at its best either.

This month we have loved getting to know the fabulous Erin Riley from Evolve Manual Therapy and Alex Sims from Chiropractic on Unley. They are two of our members and resident health and wellbeing gurus who specialise in helping South Australian bodies function better.

(Pssst…you can head on over to our SA Woman directory to discover them all!)

Our Blog Curator, Jess from Jess McEachen Copywriting, chatted with these lovely ladies to find out more about how they spend their days empowering women in their health and their complimentary modalities.

As well as what we can all do to feel our best and when it’s time to reach out for help.

~ A big thank you for taking time out to share your wisdom! Let’s kick off with you telling us all a little about what you do…

Erin Riley, Director of Evolve Manual Therapy: CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, whole body (mind, spirit) modality that treats the CranioSacral system.

This system is made up of the brain and spinal cord, the fascia (kind of like glad wrap) that surrounds it and the fluid that flows within the system.  This system is essentially our nervous system and because this drives all of the other systems in our body, it makes it very effective for treating many different issues.

We use gentle hands-on techniques, for a couple of reasons:

  1. When we use heavy pressure we can activate the bodies “guarding” or “fight/flight” response. When the body goes into this mode, it is difficult for us to feel for the “root cause” of the problem as all the body is showing us is what it does when it feels under threat.
  2. Gentle pressure allows us to follow the bodies own self-correcting mechanisms.Because our bodies actually know how to get well, sometimes they just need a little help!

CranioSacral Therapy is very effective across the entire lifespan, from infants to the elderly and everyone in between.  We also treat many different issues from musculoskeletal pain, to hormonal challenges, to gut issues to stress and anxiety related problems.

Alex Sim, Practice Manager of Chiropractic on Unley: We do Chiropractic. And we have fun. In a professional way, of course!

We’ve got 3 amazing Chiropractors: Dr Patrick Sim, Dr Harriet Walker and Dr Rebekah Talbot, and are located in a wonderful place right at the Cross Road end of Unley Road (between the Mercedes dealership and the Pool shop).

As for the Chiropractic, most people think of it as a musculoskeletal treatment – at the risk of sounding wanky, we’d say it’s more about life maximisation!

People can grow, adapt, move and live better when their brain and nervous system are working well. So we do that!

~ Why it is important for us to look after our bodies as business owners?

Alex: I really believe that the more we give to ourselves, the more we can give to others. This goes for many aspects of life, but in business it feels even more relevant.

We can’t truly provide a high quality and trustworthy service to our customers or clients if we aren’t healthy and grounded ourselves.

That said, there’s no place for guilt here – ‘fake it til you make it’ if you need to, but be honest with yourself about the steps you need to take to prioritise your health and wellbeing (stress levels and mental health included!).

When we do this, we’re often surprised that setting healthy boundaries doesn’t equate to limiting ourselves, but it will likely lead to profound growth.

Erin: It is so important as business owners to look after our bodies because the impact on our mental health is inseparable.

If we are tight, in pain or unwell it is very difficult for us to think clearly, make good decisions and do what we need to do.

Dysfunction in our bodies has a direct impact on mental/emotional wellbeing and can trigger a “looping stress response”.  This becomes a filter to everything we do and every decision we make – stifling creativity.

~ How regularly should we be reaching out to your business? Or, what are the warning signs to watch out for?

Alex: Flexibility and empowering people to understand their own bodies is key!

Some people come in sporadically when they notice symptoms, some people come in for regular checkups anywhere from monthly to weekly, and some people utilise acute care which can be a couple of times a week for a few weeks.

There’s no hard and fast rule – and it’s entirely up to the individual!

Obviously our Chiropractors are well trained and experienced to offer their recommendations, but people need to align those with their own goals and values to choose how they action them.

As far as warning signs, some people present with anything/everything and some people come in for a check-up to optimise their health and function. There’s really no hard and fast rule here either!

Actually, it’s probably most important to remember that a Chiropractor is working primarily with your nervous system, and we all have a nervous system – when your nervous system is working well, so is the rest of you!

Erin: Often people come in with an initial complaint and we might see them for a few sessions weekly in order to help make some big shifts.

Then, often people love how the work helps them thrive in their lives, so they engage in a regular self-care/maintenance routine of 4-6 weekly, or whatever works in their busy lives!

If you are feeling stiff and sore, if you have pain, if you have a lot of different problems (sore neck, headaches, hormones our of whack, gut issues) these are all signs that your body is struggling.  This would be a good time to reach out.

~ Do you have any other information or statistics you want to share?

Erin: Self-care needs to be part of our monthly (or weekly) routine.  It isn’t a luxury, it is a necessity!

We can only thrive in business (and our lives) if we are taking care of ourselves, taking some time out to re-centre and give to ourselves.

Alex: Did you know that after a single session of Chiropractic care, strength and conditioning in stroke patients improved by 60%? Or that one Chiropractic session was found equal to 3 weeks of strength and conditioning training in athletes?

Or that there’s currently strong research being done on the link between Chiropractic and the reduction in stress hormones, reduction in reaction times and reduction of falls in the elderly? There are stats-galore so I thought I’d just throw in a random selection that I thought were cool!

~ And lastly, why do you love what you do?

Alex: I love that we are surrounded by people who take life by the horns and OWN it! People who want the best for themselves and their friends and family.

I love that we get to see and appreciate the small (or big) moments in people’s lives – we call them Profound Awakenings and it doesn’t matter how subtle they are.

People do amazing things in their lives every.single.day that are worth noticing.

– // –

Erin: I love what I do because I get to witness (and facilitate) powerful change in people’s health and wellbeing.

I have witnessed profound healing, long-term health challenges reversed and people become empowered around their own health and wellbeing.

I love nothing more than witnessing someone become so “in touch” with their mind and body that they are able to make mindful choices around how they live their lives and how they can thrive!
